Confronting Tom
They asked Tom questions about his work and his life prior to meeting Jane. They knew that something was wrong as soon as they saw him struggle with his answers. Jane’s mom was not one to avoid confrontations. She kept pushing Tom until he finally admitted the truth.
Judge him
He finally said, “I lived on the street when I met Jane.” Jane could see her parents’ faces turn disgusted as Tom’s words took hold. Her mother said in the most sarcastic, judgmental tone: “You’re homeless?”
Yes, I was. “But now I live with Jane as we are getting married.”
Talking her into it
Jane was relieved when their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of her parents, but she knew that the rest would be a nightmare. She tried to convince her mother not to marry Tom every time she was alone with her.
Nothing worked. Jane loved him no matter what his background was.
