The King of Comedy, Jerry’s attempt to play the straight man was successful.
Lewis was fortunate that, despite not having a spectacular return to the big-screen, things quickly turned in his favor. After releasing ‘Hardly Working,’ he went on to release the black comedy drama film ‘The King of Comedy’. In this movie, Jerry left the more outrageous antics up to Robert De Niro while he played the straight man.
Lewis was forced to make a major change in his life, and it came with some risks. It seems that he made the right decision by trying something different. It was at least from a critic’s perspective. The film was a hit with critics, but it didn’t do well commercially, so only a few millions were made at the box office. The budget for the film was $19million.
The couple got married in the 1940s but the relationship was over by 1980
Jerry Lewis’ career has been a rollercoaster over the years. But it wasn’t only his professional life which was up and down. The comedian was in a similar situation with his personal life. It began as soon as he married his first wife, in 1944.
Patti was there for many of Lewis’ greatest moments, even before he found success with Dean Martin. The same year that Jerry received some negative criticism for ‘Hardly Working,’ the comedian’s spouse also filed for divorce. After more than 35 years of marriage, Lewis wasn’t the man Palmer wanted to get up with anymore.
