The marriage was not a disaster for 30 years. They had many happy years together and weren’t even alone. In the span of 20 years, their family grew until they now had six children. Jerry’s wife was happy, but his sons weren’t.
But becoming a dad didn’t make him miserable. He admitted that the laughter of his children in the 1970s stopped him from committing suicide. The comedian had to have loved the family that he created with Patti, no matter what hardships they faced.

Palmer did not cite Jerry’s treatment towards their children as the main reason for her divorce. It was instead her husband’s behavior towards other women which proved to be the major issue. Lewis admitted in interviews that he had difficulty being faithful to Patti.
He was very open about his extramarital affairs, and appeared unapologetic when discussing them. Jerry allegedly had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, as well as being intimate with Suzan’s mother. Marlene Dietrich is another celebrity he reportedly got close to while married Palmer. Neither she nor Monroe had any children with him.
