Kissy face
The Mars Curiosity Rover captured this image of a rock that has a face. You can see a face in the side view if you look closely at the part of the picture that is encircled. You can see the nose, forehead, eyes, cheeks, lips and chin.
This is a fascinating case of pareidolia, even though it’s obvious that this is not a real living creature in the sand. This “face” is entertaining because the lips are puckered as if asking for a hug.
Waffle mound
In 2014, the Reconnaissance Orbiter took a picture of this island on Mars’ Athabasca region. The unusual circular formation, which is 1.2 miles in diameter, has fascinated experts for years.
Athabasca is home to the youngest lava flows on the planet. NASA experts believe that lava may have pushed the mound upwards from the bottom. We do know that the island is more like a waffle.
