A loud noise
Davis was having a heated discussion with an angry motorist when a resonant noise echoed from a distance. It was not a normal noise, but rather a crescendo which grew louder each second. This is the sound of an automobile speeding down the road.
Davis was fascinated by the audacity and recklessness of the driver. This approach was met by indignant responses from drivers who felt that they were wronged. He dismissed their protests, and punished those who were the loudest with arbitrary charges of ‘dissent’.
