The storyline focuses on both union violence and criminality. It also addresses issues such as pervasive corruption and racketeering on the Hoboken waterfronts of New Jersey. On the Waterfront has been a financial and critical success. It received 12 Academy Award nominations, and won eight awards, including Best Picture (Kazan), Best Actress Saint, and Best Actor Brando.
