Todd Field’s independent drama film is based on a short story from 1979. The film focuses on the dynamics of a changing family. Ruth and Matt Fowler live in Maine. Matt is a doctor. The entire cast is affected by the tragic affair of Frank, their son who is about to graduate.
Field shot the entire film in a Maine midcoast village. Camden, although a popular vacation destination, has a charming small-town feel. Field also shot scenes in Trevett and Rockport.
The amusement park scenes were shot at Palace Playland in Maine. He filmed a scene in Rockland’s Strand Theatre. Sissy spacek decorated her house to prepare it for filming.
The Moonrise Kingdom, Rhode Island
Wes Anderson directed this comedy-drama, which was released in 2012. It starred Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand. Bill Murray, Tilda Swanton, Edward Norton, and Bill Murray. The movie also features Bob Balaban and Jason Schwartzman. Kara Hayward and Jas Gilman are also in the film.
After its premiere at Cannes in 2012, the film received praise from a variety of sources. The Moonrise Kingdom received nominations for the Golden Globe Award and Academy Award in the categories of Best Musical or Comedy, and Best Original Screenplay. Fishers Island, New York, was used as a model to create the island map for the film. Gilman and Hayward, who played Sam and Suzy respectively, had their beach vacation in Rhode Island’s Fort Wetherill State Park. The park is located on Conanicut Island’s southern tip.
