Philomena – Maryland
The film Philomena is based on the true-life experiences Irish abortion activist Philomena. She was forced to sell her son, who was three years old, to a Catholic couple because Philomena had been unmarried at the time. Abortion was illegal. A journalist helped her locate her son.
Steven Coogan, Judi Dench and others are among the stars of this movie. Philomena, the critically acclaimed film, was nominated for four Academy Awards. It also won the Best Screenplay award at the 2013 Venice Film Festival. The director filmed most of the scenes in England and Northern Ireland, although Potomac and Poolesville played a significant role.
The filming took place in St. Pauls Church. This historic church is located in the heart of Poolesville. The church was transformed into the home of a Catholic family for filming purposes. In addition, some scenes were filmed in an early 19th-century Potomac House.
Dead Poets Society of Delaware
Peter Weir is the director of this 1989 drama film, and Robin Williams stars as John Keating. The story takes place in 1959, and is centered around a fictional aristocratic boarding school called Welton Academy located in Vermont. The story revolves around an English teacher, who inspires his students by teaching them poetry.
Dead Poets Society was a box-office success and received several awards. The film won the BAFTA for Best Film, the Cesar Award for Best Foreign Film, etc. Tom Schulman won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Delaware was chosen as the filming location instead of Vermont. St. Andrew’s School, Middleton, played a major role in the production. Delaware Street, Everett Theater and Gunning Bedford Middle School were also used as shooting locations.
