Little Big Man – Montana
Arthur Penn’s Western film was inspired by the Thomas Berger novel Little Big Man. The film was a cult favorite due to its blend of humor, drama, and adventure. Penn used both satire, and tragedy, in the film.
Dustin Hoffman is one of the actors in the film. Other actors include Faye Dunaway and Jeff Corey. Chief Dan George was nominated for the Best Supporting actor award at the 1970 Academy Awards. Little Big Man is often viewed as an anti-establishment movie from that era.
The Library of Congress has preserved it in the American National Film Registry. Penn shot some scenes in California and Alberta in Canada, but most of it was in Montana.
Hawaii – From Here to Eternity
Alfred Zinnemann, an American born in the Austrian Empire, directed and wrote the 1953 drama romance war film. It was written by Daniel Taradash. The story revolves around three United States Army soldiers, played by Burt Lancaster (as First Sergeant Milton Warden), Montgomery Clift (as Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt), and Frank Sinatra as Private Angelo Maggio.
The three soldiers are based in Hawaii before the Pearl Harbor attack. Deborah Kerr Philip Ober and Donna Reed also appear in the film. The title of the film is derived from Gentleman-Rankers by Rudyard Kipling, a poem written in 1892.
It was nominated and won eight Academy Awards in 1954. From Here to Eternity is preserved in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Shooting took place at the Hawaii military base, where the story is set.
