Bodie, California
Bodie in California, now abandoned, was once a thriving town. In the 1870s-1880s, it housed 10,000 people during the Gold Rush around Mono Lake. Since then, it has been designated a State Historic Park. The state is “arrested degradation,” which means that everything has remained as it was.

Deception Island in Antarctica
Deception Island, once known as a whaling station and research facility, is now abandoned. Volcanic eruptions caused the station to be abandoned multiple times between 1931 and 1969. Rusted boilers and beached vessels remain decaying there until now.
